Below is a list of the six most common types of mulchers on the market, with their uses, advantages and the key points to consider when choosing. Selecting the right mulcher optimises costs, makes the work more efficient and extends the life of the machine. Serrat offers different models for the needs of each application, from vegetation maintenance to forestry work and large-scale farming.

  1. Hammer mulcher
  2. Fixed-blade rotor mulcher
  3. Mulcher with hydraulic feeder or self-feeding
  4. Fixed-tooth mulcher
  5. Multi-purpose mulchers
  6. Mulcher heads for excavators and mini excavators

1. Hammer mulcher

Hammer mulchers are machines designed to shred plant residue using a rotor with swinging hammers that strike branches, leaves and crop residue directly. This system gives fast, uniform mulching, ideal for producing material that can be reused as mulch or compost, or simply for clearing plots and farmland.

The hammers and rotor are made from highly wear-resistant steels, ensuring durability and reliability even when processing dry or moderately woody material. Their robust design also lets the machine handle different branch diameters and types of plant residue, from light pruning to small and medium-sized wood.

Thanks to their versatility, hammer mulchers are useful in many applications: cleaning gardens and parks, maintaining meadows and pastures, managing crop and pruning residue in orchards, vineyards and olive groves, and even work in scrubland or rural land where efficient, uniform mulching is needed. Their solid construction and quality materials guarantee consistent performance in demanding conditions, making them a reliable, long-lasting tool for agricultural and forestry professionals.

Uses and applications

  • Pruning residue in general
  • Crop residue, pastures, meadow maintenance
  • Gardens and parks with light to medium vegetation

2. Fixed-blade rotor mulcher

Blade mulchers use a rotor fitted with blades that cut plant residue instead of striking it.

This cutting system gives a finer, more precise result, ideal for breaking up branches, pruning residue or wood from fruit trees, olives, vineyards and crops with light or medium wood. The blades cut the plant matter cleanly, which helps it break down, blend into the soil or be used as mulch or fertiliser.

In addition, the rotor and frame are built from high-strength materials, ensuring great durability and reliability even in demanding conditions.

Blade mulching also adapts to different types of plant residue. It is especially useful for pruning residue, orchard or vineyard waste, and jobs that need a fine finish without damaging the soil or the trees, helping to keep the land in good condition.

Uses and applications

  • Pruning in orchards, olive groves and vineyards when a fine, clean finish is needed
  • Managing plant residue from branches of moderate thickness
  • Maintaining farm plots, olive groves, orchards or vineyards where well-mulched residue is returned to the soil
  • Preparing mulch or incorporating plant matter into the soil after clearing or pruning

3. Mulcher with hydraulic feeder or self-feeding

Mulchers with a hydraulic feeder have an assisted feeding system (sometimes double, reversible and hydraulically driven) that picks up the plant material and moves it towards the rotor, so the tractor does not need to drive over it and the operator does not need to load it by hand.

This mechanism makes the work safer and more efficient: the tractor or machine does not have to run over ground covered in plant residue, reducing the risk of breakdowns, punctures or soil damage.

Thanks to this system, the mulcher can also handle pruning residue, branches and plant waste from olives, fruit trees, vineyards or crops with light or medium wood, making collection and mulching easier even on irregular plots, between rows or in spaces where manoeuvring a tractor is difficult.

Finally, as an important technical feature, many of these models have rotors and components designed to work with the hydraulic feeding system, which improves mulching efficiency and reduces the operator’s workload.

Uses and applications

  • Pruning and residue in orchards, olive groves or vineyards where the rows make it hard for the tractor to pass
  • Farm plots or orchards with delicate ground that should not be driven over
  • Work on irregular or difficult ground, where self-feeding makes handling the plant material easier
  • Managing medium-sized pruning residue, branches and plant waste, saving time and improving safety

4. Fixed-tooth mulcher (tungsten tip)

Fixed-tooth mulchers with tungsten tips are machines designed specifically for forestry work and soil preparation, where extreme mulching capacity and superior wear resistance are required. They work with a rotor fitted with fixed tungsten carbide teeth that act by continuous impact and cutting, allowing them to shred hardwood, forestry residue and large-diameter vegetation.

This fixed-tooth system delivers aggressive, deep mulching and can reduce trunks, stumps, surface roots and very hard woody residue. The tungsten tips are highly resistant to wear and impact, even in severe conditions such as stony ground or ground containing mineral material, ensuring a long working life and consistent performance.

Thanks to their robust design and the quality of their materials, these mulchers are built for intensive, continuous work where other solutions fall short. They are ideal for managing woodland, clearing scrubland, opening and maintaining tracks, clearing abandoned land and preparing the soil before new plantations. Their ability to work directly on the ground makes them an essential tool for forestry professionals, service companies and heavy rural works.

Uses and applications

  • Mulching forestry residue, hardwood and trunks
  • Removing stumps and surface roots
  • Clearing scrubland and forest land
  • Soil preparation and conditioning
  • Opening and maintaining tracks and rural areas

5. Multi-purpose mulchers

Multi-purpose or articulated mulchers are tractor-mounted machines with an articulated boom, which lets them work in hard-to-reach areas where a conventional mulcher cannot go: ditches, verges, embankments, sloping ground and areas next to fences or under trees.

The Serrat range of articulated mulchers is designed to work with tractors of different power ratings and to adapt to many applications: from mulching grass and weeds to maintaining tracks, meadows and professional green spaces. Their reinforced design, articulated boom and professional mulching systems ensure precision, safety and maximum durability.

Uses and applications

  • Maintaining meadows, tracks and verges
  • Mulching grass, weeds and vegetation in ditches and on embankments
  • Maintaining green spaces and farms
  • Hard-to-reach areas: fences, ditches, sloping ground

6. Mulcher heads for excavators and mini excavators

Serrat hydraulic heads are attachments designed to fit excavators, backhoe loaders, mini excavators and skid steer loaders, allowing mulching, clearing and vegetation maintenance in agricultural, forestry and public works settings. Unlike tractor mulchers, the heads work precisely in areas that are hard to reach for conventional machinery.

Serrat heads stand out for their structural strength, high-performance hydraulic motors, heavy-duty rotors and high mulching capacity. They are built for intensive work in demanding conditions and adapt to different flow rates and working pressures depending on the carrier machine.

Uses and applications

  • Clearing scrubland and plots and managing dense vegetation
  • Maintaining forest tracks, verges and embankments
  • Forest fire prevention and channel clearing
  • Areas hard to reach for tractors: field margins, rocky areas, public works
